6 min readLast updated By Kadena Wallet team

The short answer

eckoWALLET is the most-used Kadena wallet by reported user count, available as a browser extension and as iOS and Android apps. Kadena Wallet is a native desktop wallet for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Both are actively maintained, both are non-custodial, and both support the full 20-chain Kadena Chainweb architecture. They serve different primary use cases.

Platform comparison

eckoWALLET is browser-first. Install it as a Chrome, Firefox, or Edge extension and your wallet is available wherever you browse. The mobile apps work alongside or in place of the extension.

Kadena Wallet is desktop-first. Install the native application for Windows, macOS, or Linux and your wallet runs as a standalone program with no browser dependency. There is no Kadena Wallet mobile app or browser extension in v1.

Feature comparison in detail

Hardware wallet support. Kadena Wallet pairs with Ledger Nano S Plus and Nano X via WebHID. eckoWALLET does not currently support hardware wallets.

Mining-payout UX. Kadena Wallet's receive flow is built around miners receiving recurring ASIC payouts.

dApp-connect. eckoWALLET's dApp-connect is well-established and broadly adopted across Kadena dApps. Kadena Wallet uses WalletConnect v2 plus a native dApp-connect API.

eckoDEX integration. eckoDEX is built by the same team as eckoWALLET. The integration is therefore deeper in eckoWALLET. Kadena Wallet integrates with eckoDEX via dApp-connect. See Kadena Swap.

Seed-phrase formats. eckoWALLET uses standard 12-word BIP39. Kadena Wallet supports BIP39, Koala's 24-word format, and Chainweaver's custom derivation.

When to choose each

Choose Kadena Wallet if you primarily use a desktop or laptop, want Ledger hardware pairing, receive mining payouts, are migrating from Chainweaver, or want native desktop reliability without a browser dependency.

Choose eckoWALLET if you primarily use Kadena dApps in a browser, want a single wallet across browser and mobile, prefer the largest user base, use eckoDEX heavily, or are mobile-first and dApp-heavy.

Migration between them

Both wallets can import the same standard 12-word BIP39 recovery phrase, so moving accounts between them does not require a transaction. Note that Kadena Wallet may also hold accounts derived from non-BIP39 formats; those accounts will not appear in eckoWALLET, since eckoWALLET supports only BIP39.

Where eckoWALLET wins

  • Browser-extension form factor for dApp users
  • Native eckoDEX integration (same team builds both)
  • Most-used Kadena wallet by user count
  • Mobile + desktop portability via extension

Where Kadena Wallet wins

  • Native desktop reliability without browser dependency
  • Ledger hardware wallet pairing for high-value balances
  • Mining-payout receive UX for ASIC miners
  • Multi-format seed import (Chainweaver, Koala, BIP39)

Frequently asked questions

Is eckoWALLET safe?
eckoWALLET is non-custodial, has been in active use since 2021, and is the most-used Kadena wallet by reported user count. App Store reviews periodically mention occasional balance-display issues; these are UI-layer issues, not custody issues.
Can I import my eckoWALLET into Kadena Wallet?
Yes. Kadena Wallet supports standard 12-word BIP39 import.
Does eckoWALLET have a desktop version?
Not as a native application. The browser extension runs on desktop browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge).
Which is better for large holdings?
For large holdings the recommendation is hardware-wallet pairing regardless of which wallet you use. Kadena Wallet supports Ledger; eckoWALLET does not.
What's the difference in fees?
Both are free wallets. Network gas fees apply equally per the Kadena protocol.
